Character Name: Alexandra Drake
Canon: Ashes to Ashes
Canon Point: The end of 3x08, right before she enters the Railway Arms
Character Journal: [personal profile] theposhmouthytart

Appearance: Alex is about 5 foot 8 and an average build, with brown hair and eyes and sharp, distinctive features. By her current canon point she keeps her hair short, neat and out of her face, and she tends to favor jeans, boots and some kind of sweater or blazer. While her make up style has moved to more neutral territory, she still occasionally sports the chunky jewelry and colorful clothing indicative of the 1980s.

Age: Mid thirties
History: Alex Drake Wiki

Personality: While normally a grounded and logical individual, Alex's experience after being shot and waking up in the 1980s shook her perception of all she understood about the world she lived in to its limits.

After she joined the Metropolitan Police, Alex pursued a degree in psychology. She always found people's brains and how they worked to be fascinating, and the study of psychology helped her to further understand the thoughts of the criminals she pursued as well as her fellow officers. A policeman in particular, Sam Tyler, who claimed to experience travelling back to the 1970s while in a coma before ending his own life, stood out to her to the point that she began working on a book regarding his experience. It was during that time that Alex herself was shot and, upon waking up in London in 1983, she believed her interest in Sam's case directly influenced her subconscious' creation of her own surroundings.

Regardless of her generally level-headed thinking, Alex experiences a number of difficulties adjusting to her surroundings and develops alcoholic tendencies. It may have been a coping mechanism, as Alex makes it clear she wasn't much of a drinker; but it also my personal belief that being drunk made her feel like the surreal aspects of her time-travelling life were more tolerable. Alex also would suffer from constant headaches and exhaustion, which seemed to be linked to her gunshot wound and struggle for survival in the modern world. During in times of crisis or emotional distress, Alex can suffer from clouded judgment, saying and alluding to things that might make complete sense to her, but to others, comes off as the ramblings of a raving lunatic. Due to her confusion and struggle to grasp her strange situation, Alex spent her first two years in the 1980s suffering from mood swings, dizzy spells and erratic behavior.

By the beginning of the third season, after Alex appears to experience waking up from her coma and going back to her life in 2008, only to wake up again from a coma in 1983, she is much more lucid and more grounded in the reality that 1983 offers. Although she is still distinctly aware that she is misplaced, coming back from 2008 has seemed to channel her goals into a more coherent need to help the people she left behind, and with that, she has better control over her outbursts and occasional wayward personality. On the other hand, she still receives communications from 2008 and suffers from frequent hallucinations, including the haunting image of a dead copper with a mutilated face and memories of her few moments of consciousness in the hospital.

Alex is stubborn, often to a fault, and considers herself in a higher educational class than those she worked with in the 1980s. She is often extremely patronizing and she has no problem prodding at people to get her way when she is aware of an exposed weakness. As proud and professional as she is, Alex also has a fun streak and isn't unwilling to dance, joke, and have fun. She is also, at times, extremely insecure about her place in the universe, and often turns to those she trusts in times of need to validate her.

She considers herself the CID den mother, often offering unsolicited advice when she feels it is needed. Over time, and as her comfort levels rise with her new team, she is more honest and open about her feelings towards her team. She genuinely cares about their well being, but her compassion is not strictly confined to her co-workers. Alex is more than willing to stick her neck out for anyone in need if she feels it will protect or assist them. She is also fiercely loyal, which is particularly obvious in the case of Gene Hunt. Although she doesn't always like Gene and often finds herself doubting her trust in him, she always remains at his side. Even when his entire team abandons him, it is Alex who stays at his side and pushes him to be the great leader she knows he is capable of being.

Alex will be coming from the moment before she steps into the pub in the finale, she will be coming into the game with complete clarity and understanding of her situation. She is heartbroken about losing her daughter and the life that she had, but she had also come to a kind of peace with it. Coming into Altered States will be a confusion experience for her, but also a relief as she will see it as another chance at having a life.

Powers/Special Abilities: Nope. Her weird experiences in canon and sometimes prophetic flashes were subject to the purgatory-type universe she was in while in her coma, and will not follow her into AS.
River Power: Retrocognition. Alex will be able to see past events in great detail. At first it will come to her in random images and experiences when she encounters related things (similar to her canon experiences), but over time she will grow to be able to control it.

Reason for Character Choice: I originally played Alex back in 2009 at a game called Crowded Hour. She was the second or third serious muse I ever picked up. Unfortunately, the game imploded and I never really felt like I got the chance to explore her fully. I recently got to rewatch the show and it reignited my love for this character, and I found myself wanting to revisit her again.
Additional Information: Nope!

Gene.

[ There is a pause, a slow breath out and a clearing of a throat before she continues. ] You won't be able to hear this for a while. Maybe never, depending on if I... I leave this place before you do. But I wanted to make sure there was a record, some kind of history of what's happening to me here. I thought when I walked through that door, I was leaving you forever. You wouldn't believe my surprise when I found you again. My relief. I don't think I was ready, Gene. I wanted to be. I wanted to be strong for Chris, and Shaz, and Ray, and you. But I wasn't.

[ Her voice falters again, fighting back tears. ] Maybe this is the place we go if we aren't ready. Or maybe it's our second chance. A chance at a life neither of us really had. I know what you'll be thinking. That I'm crazy. That I'm in love with the sound of my own voice and that's why I keep making these recordings. But it's different now, Gene. When I first started these tapes, it was about fear, about distrust. Now... Now it's about hope. Hope that both of us will get the second chance we deserve.

I hope that's the case. For both our sake.
